However, Frances explains that it's not her fault and that Paul would have wanted Terri to attend the program. ![]() Terri tells her mother, Frances, that if she hadn't convinced Paul to sneak out to the concert he'd still be alive. She wants to quit singing and not attend the music program. Terri awakens in the hospital, where she learns that Paul was killed. On the way back, they have a car accident and are hit by a drunk driver. Terri sneaks Paul out of the house to attend a Three Days Grace concert. At Paul's graduation-day barbecue, he has a fight with Simon, who, in the heat of it, grounds his son. Terri is very close to her elder brother Paul, who fully supports her dream, despite what their father says. Simon thinks this is the only way to keep Terri safe. Simon believes that Terri will get hurt if she goes to Los Angeles and would prefer if she continues running the family business. Her overprotective father Simon, a second-generation restaurateur, disapproves of Terri's plans, stating that being a singer may not be a worthwhile life choice. She wants to participate in a music program that could give her a $10,000 scholarship. Running time: 103 minutes.Terri Fletcher is a teenager with a passion for singing and dreams of becoming a professional singer. "Raise Your Voice" is rated PG for occasional use of mild profanity (mostly religiously based) and some mildly vulgar slang terms and a brief scene of violence (vehicular, mostly overheard). Meanwhile, veteran television director Sean McNamara pads things out with an endless series of musical montages and shots of the L.A. At least she's not as bad as James, whose pseudo-punk hairstyle is even more obnoxious than his character. And the fact that you have people as talented as DeMornay, Wilson and John Corbett (as a rebellious, unconventional instructor) slumming in something like this only makes it worse.Īs for Duff, there's an odd and somewhat creepy little-girl tone to her singing voice, and her performances both musically and dramatically aren't very compelling. It's painfully obvious where all this is going. A fellow student, Jay (Oliver James), aims to change all that. And she's also having a hard time recovering from the accident that took her brother's life. Once she gets there, Terri finds that she really doesn't fit in. So her aunt (Rebecca DeMornay) and mother (Rita Wilson) concoct a scam that will allow her to go to L.A. The school is impressed and accepts Terri into its summer program. However, Terri's brother (Jason Ritter) sends a DVD of Terri's performances to the conservatory, before his untimely death. However, those who require a little more should avoid her latest calculated-to-offend-no-one musical-drama, which blatantly steals from "Fame" without so much as a thank-you.ĭuff stars as Terri Fletcher, a musically talented Arizona teen whose strict father (David Keith) refuses to let her attend the music conservatory of her dreams (he's seen the "evils" that Los Angeles has to offer). (Duff has proven, after all, that she has a devoted following that apparently enjoys such things.) There may be a youth audience that still will embrace a movie this by-the-numbers and safe, without so much as a hint of edginess. ![]() just as each has become more predictable and treacly. If it's possible, each successive Hilary Duff film seems to become more formulaic than the one before. ![]()
